Top 3 Tips in Choosing the Best Rabbit Hutches for Your Pet

Rabbits are a great choice for a first pet. Aside from being cute and cuddly, they are also easy to care for and adapt well.

Rabbits take well to safe and secure places as much as having a good enough space to roam around. Rabbit hutches make

for good dwellings if you plan to keep them outdoors. These hutches come in all sizes and shapes designed to meet

this particular need.

There seems to be hundreds of rabbit hutch and run designs in the market today. With this dizzying array, which will make

your pet truly happy? True to being a low maintenance pet, finding a good rabbit home is easy. Here are the top three tips

to finding that perfect bunny dwelling place:

1. Consider your pet. Large rabbit hutches are perfect for bigger pets or if you have more than just one. A double

rabbit hutch in particular comes highly recommended if you have two or more rabbits.

There is no hard and fast rule for the ideal hutch space. Some will suggest getting a hutch that is at least four times

bigger than the pet’s size. Another measuring stick is to allocate at least one square foot for every half kilo of your pet’s

weight.

2. Consider the size and location of your space. Just like in the real estate world, you have to note the location,

location, location. Shady areas are good places to install rabbit hutches as the temperature is more controlled. The area

should also be free from potential predators and other pets that may harass your rabbits.

Make sure that the hutch will fit into your chosen area. Many owners install the rabbit hutch and run together in a safe

area. This lessens the needed care for rabbits and allows owners to easily provide both shelter and exercise area.

3. Consider the hutch itself. Rabbit hutches should be well ventilated for the health of your pets. Many hutches now

have litter boxes that let you clean up the hutch quickly and properly dispose of the droppings. Be sure to clean the

litter collector once a day to help keep the rabbits healthy.

Many rabbit hutches are made of wood and wire mesh. This is more for function than aesthetics. Rabbits love to gnaw

and fiberglass fences breakdown under their powerful teeth. Be careful of any chemical treatment in the wood used as

the fumes may make your rabbit sick.

Take note of the flooring. Wire mesh floorings allow droppings to fall through the floor but these can chafe the soft pads on

the rabbit’s feet. The best option for this is to line the wire floor with hay or shredded newspapers, which need to be

replaced regularly.

Check the wire mesh for holes or snags that may hurt your pet. Inspect the interiors also for sharp and rough edges.

Some hutch designs come with special exercise stations, steps and platforms. These are more of a bonus and a personal preference (yours or your pet’s). A large space will allow your pet to get some exercise indoors when it rains. And the

mini-gym is just there to keep them occupied.
